The final day of World Cup 1 saw top teams from around the world competing in the mixed relay. Team USA’s Mary Zoldak and Caleb Allen teamed up for that relay. The day started with the fencing ranking round. It was not the best of days for Mary and Caleb, but they gained valuable experience to help prepare for future competitions. Their score of 138 points put them in 8th place for the event. After the fencing ranking round was the riding event. Team USA drew some good horses, but a little hectic warmup caused Caleb to fall off the horse. He did not get hurt, but the judges wanted to err on the side of caution and decided to not allow Caleb to continue the riding event. Because of this decision, Team USA was eliminated from the riding event. The fencing bonus round was next. Team USA was up against Egypt. Mary was up first and with Egypt attacking, Mary lost a close in fighting battle. Caleb needed to score two victories to defeat Egypt. Unfortunately, a hit on the hand against Caleb helped Egypt secure the victory. By losing this bout, no bonus points were gained. The swimming event was up next. Mary got Team USA off to a good start with Caleb anchoring in a 58-second 100m split. Their time of 2:20.4 was a total of 270 points and was the 8th fastest time. Heading into the laser run, Team USA was in 8th place. Mary started things off with some solid running. She struggled on the first shooting series but got a faster time on the second series. Caleb took over for the second leg with some good running and good shooting, getting his two series in under 30 seconds total. Their time of 15:46 kept them in the same spot. Team USA finished the day with a total of 762 points and an 8th place overall finish.
This concludes World Cup #1. Up next for Team USA is World Cup #2 in Ankara, Turkey from 16-21 April.
