Eli Bremer (Q&A - March 2010)
Eli Bremer, 31, is a 2008 Olympian and was a 2006 Pan American and U.S. National Champion. He is competing this month at World Cup #1 in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
Eli answered the following 10 questions for this month's Athlete Profile...
Q1: Do you have any pre-competition superstitions or rituals that you adhere to?
ELI BREMER: Not really. We travel to other time zones a lot, and I just try to get onto the new time as soon as possible. They are not really rituals that get me there, but I do try to stay very disciplined to overcome the jetlag.
Q2: Do you have a favorite pre-competition meal?
ELI BREMER: I'd always pick pasta and fresh vegetables, but we rarely have much choice when we travel.
Q3: What's your favorite board game ever?
ELI BREMER: Axis and Allies.
Q4: Besides the five disciplines of modern pentathlon, are there any other sports you've played competitively?
ELI BREMER: No.
Q5: Assuming you make the 2012 Olympic Team, what's something you really want to do in London?
ELI BREMER: I would go on the Eye of London again. I did that with Dennis Bowsher and Niul Manske in 2008 and we really enjoyed it. I would also like to see London Bridge.
Q6: What do you feel most attributes to the peaks and valleys of competition involved with any Olympic sport, but especially with modern pentathlon, and how hard is it to remain at a world-class level consistently?
ELI BREMER: Pentathlon is extremely volatile because the field is wide open. Around the world, there are a bunch of athletes who are constantly waiting to move into the top slots. However, the best indicator of long term success in pentathlon is always the run/swim. That is why the top athletes in the world put so much effort into those two sports. Strong run/swim athletes consistently put themselves in a position to win major competitions.
Q7: Best movie you've recently seen?
ELI BREMER: My wife and I typically watch TV series rather than movies. Our favorites have been "24" and "The Unit".
Q8: What do you know now that you wish you'd have known when you first became involved in modern pentathlon?
ELI BREMER: I wish I had understood the importance of recovery and paying attention to details.
Q9: What's your favorite TV show?
ELI BREMER: "Modern Marvels" on the History Channel.
Q10: Favorite area of study when you were in high school (college)?
ELI BREMER: I majored in Economics and have loved it ever since. I am sort of a geek about it, and maybe that is why I am drawn to business. I also like marketing and that was the emphasis of my MBA.
